The
First Signs Screening Kit is a key component of our educational outreach program.
The kit includes an educational video, a wall chart, validated screening tools,
screening guidelines, and an Early Intervention referral guide.
The mission of First Signs
is
to promote the early identification of, and intervention for, autism and other
developmental disorders.
To this end, we have developed the First Signs
Screening
Kit, which provides
pediatric practitioners with the tools to discuss parent concerns, offer routine screenings,
and when necessary, to be able to respond to the "First Signs” of
a developmental disorder
through referral and follow-up.
Special Offer: Order a
First Signs Screening Kit before and
receive a free copy of Could it Be Autism? A Parent’s Guide
to the First Signs and Next Steps by founder and president Nancy D.
Wiseman.

The Screening Kit includes:
1. Our video (VHS only) for pediatric
professionals, On the Spectrum:
Children and Autism
On the Spectrum: Children and Autism is
a 24-minute educational video for pediatric professionals, created in collaboration with the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical
School, The New Jersey Center for Outreach and Services for the Autism Community,
Inc. (COSAC), and First Signs, Inc. Our video will enable
medical practitioners, clinicians, and other
early childhood professionals to recognize the early warning signs of autism
in early childhood and to understand the impact of early
and appropriate intervention. The video outlines the diagnostic criteria for
autism
spectrum disorders, provides the guidelines for conducting a developmental
screening, and describes how to relay developmental concerns to parents. Differences
in
development are vividly demonstrated through videotaped examples of typical
and atypical behavior in children from four to thirty-six months of age. Newswoman
Lesley Stahl of “60 Minutes” narrates this video; it also features
actor Anthony Edwards of “E.R.” and parents of children with autism,
including football legend Doug Flutie and his wife, Laurie Flutie. “On the
Spectrum” draws upon clinical expertise, with interviews of some of the
nation’s top experts i n the field.

Key Milestones for Social, Emotional, and Communication Development
Developed in collaboration with Stanley I. Greenspan, M.D., Amy Wetherby, Ph.D.,
CCC-SLP, Barry Prizant, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, and First Signs, the Key
Milestones for Social, Emotional, and Communication Development wall chart is a quick
office reference for hallmark developmental milestones. The wall chart measures
32” x 16” and includes healthy milestones as well as
red
flag indicators for immediate evaluation. When posted in a physician’s
office, it can serve as an educational tool and as a means to encourage
discussion of developmental milestones during each well visit.
