One of the goals of First Signs is to give parents and professionals
the tools to help ensure the best developmental outcome
for all children. Our Resources section provides healthcare professionals, educators, and families with
information regarding useful books, Web sites, products, and services for both healthy and atypical development. In this section, you will find links to:
Parents of a child with a developmental delay or disorder often must assume
many roles, including researcher, advocate, and teacher, in
addition to that of a loving, involved caregiver. Many parents
become overwhelmed while trying to navigate the unfamiliar
territory of developmental disorders -- the acronyms and
jargon, the screenings and referrals, and the range of treatment
approaches and educational interventions. Our Resources section
is designed to help reduce the steep learning curve by providing
links to useful information about both typical and atypical
development with a special emphasis on social, emotional, and communication disorders
and other special needs, such as autism.
We also encourage all healthcare
and educational professionals to explore this section of our Web
site, whether they be pediatricians, family practitioners, nurse practitioners,
diagnostic specialists, therapists, early childhood professionals, or teachers. All professionals
who work with young children play a pivotal role in promoting
positive outcomes for children with developmental disorders
and their families. This role includes screening, referral,
and follow-up, and requires familiarity with a broad range
of issues, from family advocacy to emerging scientific research.
We hope all specialties will benefit from the information
shared here.
